The Kankantri, or silk cotton tree, the giant of the Caribbean, is widely believed to have a connection to the spirits and ancestors in Suriname and other parts of the Caribbean. In the film by Gabri Christa, it symbolises the parallel world that the protagonist travels with the ancestors. In the "Ingi Wasi" (herbal cleansing/wash) scene with the Native shaman woman, the tree looms largely.
When a woman enters a house of worship she can not leave until she dances and takes part in the rituals in the parallel world of her ancestors, and exits healed. Kankantri is a 25 minute magic surrealism docu-dance film filmed in Suriname, South America a former Dutch colony. The film deals with all the parts of colonialism.
Kankantri (the silk cotton tree) is part of the Another Building, a series of single short films responding to buildings and sites related to the Dutch Colonial History.
Gabri Christa makes original works for stage and screen and hails from Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean and lives in New York City.
