Workshop 1: Women and Girls: A Career in Sound SystemOTHER EngagementsMarilyn Dennis, aka Lady Banton

Lady Banton and Seduction City Sound’s journey in the Sound system world and the carnival space.

A visual and audio workshop about the history of women in sound system culture in England, differences between a PA and a sound system, as well as the technical side of the sound system. We will cover the top section of the system, amplification, turntables, and laptops. We briefly examine the importance of the black women’s role in the dancehall space, and how the black woman navigates the spiritual space of the dance, as described by academics as a site of sexual expression and freedom.

This workshop is designed for all women, and we warmly welcome trans women and anyone who identifies with womanhood in all its diverse forms. We aim to create a supportive, respectful, and inclusive environment where all participants feel seen, valued, and safe.

(Knowing this, male programmers, who are interested in this workshop are welcome)

Facilitator: Marilyn Dennis, aka Lady Banton, is the sound system operator of Seduction City Sound, the only female sound system at the Notting Hill Carnival in London. She is a female reggae selector who loves reggae and dancehall, but whilst dj’ing she has chosen to provide a unique and safe space for women to enjoy themselves, no slackness, no gun lyrics and no homophobic lyrics.
