William Shakespeare’s The TempestPitchMaynardville Theatre NPCSouth Africa

This production of The Tempest is cast with a female actress who plays Prospero, enabling an exploration from a feminine perspective- the relationship between Prospera and Miranda is one of mother and daughter, and the resilience of this bond in the face of adversity. It highlights the feminine capacity to forgive severe betrayal. Antoinette Kellermann plays Prospero, the banished Duke of Milan, now a powerful sorcerer bent on reclaiming her honour.

The Maynardville Open-Air Festival has produced an annual Shakespeare in the Park since 1956. For 7 weeks, Cape Town’s Maynardville Park is transformed into a performance space which features Cape Town's most prestigious performing arts institutions. In 2025, the festival will be a 100% compostable festival, primarily achieved through waste reclaimers. In The Tempest, the ocean is a central symbol representing nature's unpredictable and transformative power.  A living art installation has been created as a reminder of the beauty of the ocean, entitled ‘Waves of Wonder’.
