Don’t Kill Me When I’m Dead celebrates the culture of death, honouring ancestors of the Mijikenda people, native to the Kenyan coast. It revolves around a deceased member of the Gohu community (secret society of Mijikenda elders) who returns to his modern kinsmen, with demands about rites owed to him in his death, including the ‘Kigango’, a stolen artefact, currently being restituted from the global north, whose role is community protection. Language, music and dance play key roles in communication between the loving and the dead.
Jukwaa Arts is a performing arts company based in Mombasa, Kenya. It voices social issues through the creation and presentation of performing and visual arts. Our objectives are: to nurture performing artists and create opportunities for artists; to use performing arts as a tool for communication on social issues in community; and to use art as a vehicle to transport culture locally, globally, now and in the future.
